West Hill and Delaware Avenue: Choosing an Albany Base

Two very different Albany neighbourhoods, one practical question: which side of the city should your hotel room sit on?

West Hill: space, parking and the hospital campus

West Hill spreads west of downtown around Albany Medical Center and the sprawling Harriman State Office Campus, with Washington Avenue as its main artery. This is not a stroll-to-the-capitol neighbourhood; it is car country. Hotels and motels here tend to be chain properties on and just off Washington Avenue and Western Avenue, generally cheaper per night than downtown rooms, with free surface parking that downtown garages charge for. You get space, quiet evenings and quick access to the University at Albany's uptown campus and Crossgates Mall, roughly 15 minutes by car.

The trade-off is that you drive to nearly everything. Buses on Washington Avenue run downtown, but a ten-minute drive becomes twenty-five on the bus. If your trip is hospital visits, a college move-in or a family stopover on a longer road trip, West Hill is the sensible, unglamorous choice. If you are here for the Empire State Plaza, the museums or Lark Street, you will spend your savings on rides and lose the evenings you came for.

Delaware Avenue: walkable, residential and close to the action

Delaware Avenue runs north from the fringes of downtown through a dense grid of Victorian-era rowhouses and small apartment blocks, past the Delaware Avenue commercial strip and toward the Normanskill. The appeal is proximity: the Washington Park and Center Square historic districts are a ten- to fifteen-minute walk, as are Lark Street's bars and restaurants, the New York State Museum and the capitol complex. Lodging is small and modest here, a mix of guesthouses and short-stay apartments rather than big-name hotels.

Parking is the catch. Many properties have none, or one shared space, and street parking is permit-controlled in parts of Center Square and Hudson/Park. You are paying for location, not amenities. For a three-night city break between May and October, I would book a Delaware Avenue guesthouse and leave the car at home, using the CDTA bus network and walking. It is the base that makes Albany feel like a place rather than a stop.

Getting around and the honest cost comparison

Albany is compact. From Delaware Avenue you can walk to the Palace Theatre on Clinton Avenue in twenty minutes and reach the Amtrak station at Rensselaer across the river in about fifteen minutes by car or a bus-plus-walk. From West Hill, downtown is a five- to ten-minute drive outside rush hour but closer to twenty when Washington Avenue backs up toward the Medical Center. Albany International Airport is around twenty minutes from both. A car is a liability in Center Square and an asset on West Hill.

On price, expect the split to hold year-round: West Hill's chain rooms are typically the lower band, downtown and Delaware Avenue the higher, with September and October, leaf season and graduation weekends the tightest and most expensive. Albany's cruel joke is winter; January and February are cheap, cold and quiet, and if you are not visiting family or a campus, skip them. Book Delaware Avenue for spring and autumn, West Hill for a car-based family trip.

Which one I would book

For a first Albany visit of two to four nights, book Delaware Avenue, ideally near Washington Park, and plan around walking. You will be minutes from the state museum, the plaza and the Lark Street restaurants, and you will not need to move the car. Ask specifically about parking before you book, and check whether the property sits inside a permit zone. Look at the block, not just the postcode: Delaware Avenue itself fades into quieter residential streets north of the commercial strip.

Choose West Hill if you are travelling with children, arriving late, or combining Albany with the Adirondacks or Cooperstown. The parking and space genuinely matter, and the drive times are short when traffic cooperates. What I would skip: the anonymous motel strips along Central Avenue to the north, which offer neither neighbourhood nor easy downtown access. Between the two, Delaware Avenue wins for a city trip and West Hill wins for a road trip. Decide which one you are on, then book.

Questions, answered

Do I need a car to stay in Albany?

Not if you base yourself around Delaware Avenue and Washington Park, where the museum, plaza and Lark Street are walkable and buses fill the gaps. West Hill practically requires a car, since it is spread along Washington and Western avenues with limited pedestrian routes downtown.

When is the best time to book an Albany hotel?

Late spring through October gives the best walking weather and park scenery, but September and October are the busiest and dearest. January and February are cheapest and coldest. Book well ahead for university graduation weekends, when rooms citywide tighten.

How far are the airport and train station?

Albany International Airport is roughly twenty minutes by car from both neighbourhoods. The Amtrak station in Rensselaer sits across the river, about fifteen minutes from Delaware Avenue and twenty from West Hill, depending on traffic on the interstate.
