Troy and Cohoes in Fall: A Half-Day Loop North of Albany

An easy morning-to-afternoon circuit through collar-city brick, canal locks and Hudson River overlooks, back in Albany by dinner.

Why this loop works from an Albany base

Albany rewards travellers who treat it as a hub rather than a single stop. From downtown hotels near the Empire State Plaza, it is roughly 20 minutes up Interstate 787 and Route 7 to Troy, and another 15 minutes north to Cohoes — short enough that you can leave after breakfast and be back on Lark Street for an early dinner. Parking in Troy is easiest at the Uncle Sam Garage on River Street or the Green Island lot off Bridge Street, both a few minutes' walk from the waterfront.

October is the reliable month. Peak foliage along the Hudson usually lands somewhere between the first and third week, and weekday mornings mean you are not competing for parking with the farmers' market crowds that fill Troy on Saturdays from May to November. Bring a warm layer: riverfront wind at Prospect Park and the Cohoes Falls overlook is noticeably sharper than in downtown Albany.

Morning: Troy's waterfront and Monument Square

Start at Riverfront Park on the south side of the Green Island Bridge, where the Hudson bends and the old collar factories line the bank. Walk north along the waterfront into downtown, then climb the hillside to Monument Square, the Civil War memorial at the top of the Second Street steps. Second Street itself is the best single block in the city for nineteenth-century commercial brick, and the Russell Sage College campus nearby adds a quieter residential stretch of intact rowhouses.

Coffee and a pastry on Broadway or Third Street will set you back a few dollars; there is no need to plan a sit-down breakfast in Troy. Skip the Uncle Sam parking garage if you arrive after 10am on a Saturday — the farmers' market fills it and you will queue. The Green Island lot is the better bet. Allow about ninety minutes here before heading north.

Midday: Cohoes Falls and the canal locks

Drive Route 32 north through Watervliet and across to Cohoes, roughly fifteen minutes. Cohoes Falls Overlook Park, off School Street, gives you the second-largest waterfall in New York State by volume after Niagara — a wide curtain of water over shale that is at its most dramatic after autumn rain. The park is free and the walk from the lot is flat and short, which makes it a good stop for mixed-age groups.

Pair it with the Van Schaick Island section of the Erie Canalway Trail, where the old flight of locks climbs toward Waterford. The towpath is paved and level, good for a half-hour walk in either direction. I would book this morning rather than the afternoon if you are travelling with children: the falls overlook has little shade and the light on the water is better before noon. Return to Albany via I-787, or loop through Waterford and Mechanicville if you want more river scenery.

Where to stay and what to skip

Base yourself in Albany rather than Troy. Downtown Albany hotels near the Palace Theatre and the Times Union Center put you within walking distance of restaurants on Pearl Street and North Pearl, and rates in October are generally lower than in Troy's small boutique inventory, which fills quickly around Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute events. If you want a quieter stay, the suburban properties along Wolf Road in Colonie are ten minutes from the airport and twenty from Troy.

Skip the guided tours and the riverboat cruises that run on weekend afternoons — the drive is short enough to do independently and you will see more on foot. Also skip trying to combine this with a Saratoga Springs day; the two together make for a rushed, traffic-heavy afternoon on Route 9. One more note: if you are comparing this trip with a New York City weekend, remember upstate autumn arrives roughly three weeks earlier, so mid-October here is already late-season colour.

Questions, answered

How long does the drive from Albany to Troy take?

About 20 minutes via I-787 and Route 7, slightly longer in weekday rush hour. Cohoes is a further 15 minutes north on Route 32. Parking in downtown Troy is easiest at the Green Island lot off Bridge Street.

When is the best time to see fall foliage on this route?

Usually the first to third week of October, with the Hudson riverfront and Cohoes Falls overlook peaking early. Weekday mornings are quieter, and the farmers' market on Saturdays fills downtown Troy parking from May to November.

Is Cohoes Falls worth the detour?

Yes. The overlook park off School Street is free, the walk is short and flat, and the falls are the second-largest in the state by volume. Go before noon for better light and fewer visitors.
