Family-Friendly Albany Restaurants: Where to Eat Beyond the Kids' Menu
Albany's best family meals happen in converted warehouses, college-town pubs and old-school Italian rooms — here is where to book a table and where to sleep nearby.
When to Come and Where to Base Yourself
Late April through June is the sweet spot: the Tulip Festival fills Washington Park in May, patios open, and the city is walkable without the July humidity. September and early October are nearly as good, with the State Street and Lark Street crowds thinner than in summer. January and February are quiet and cheap, but you will spend more time driving between neighbourhoods than strolling them, and a few Pine Hills kitchens go dark.
For accommodation, I would book a downtown or Center Square hotel if you plan to eat on foot — the Hampton Inn on Chapel Street and the Renaissance on State Street both put you inside a 15-minute walk of most of what is described above. If you are driving in from New York City or Westchester, which is where most of our searches come from, the roughly 2.5-hour run up the Thruway makes an uptown or Wolf Road hotel with free parking the more sensible base for one night. Two nights, and downtown earns its rate.
Questions, answered
Do Albany restaurants take family reservations?
The larger Warehouse District and downtown rooms generally do, and you should book for groups of five or more, especially Friday and Saturday. Most Lark Street and Pine Hills spots are walk-in only. Aim for before 5:30pm or after 8pm with young children.
Where should we stay for a family food trip to Albany?
Center Square or downtown puts you within a 15-minute walk of Lark Street and the Warehouse District, which is the whole point of the trip. If you are driving up from New York City for one night, an Uptown or Wolf Road hotel with free parking is cheaper and easier.
What is the best month to visit Albany with kids?
May and June, when the Tulip Festival fills Washington Park, patios are open and the Lark Street strip is at its liveliest. September and early October are quieter alternatives. Avoid late December and August, when university breaks close some Pine Hills kitchens.
