Albany Between the Holidays: A Quiet Week Worth Booking

The stretch from December 26 to New Year's Eve is Albany's calmest hotel week, which makes it the easiest time to see the Capitol, the museums and the riverfront without a crowd.

State offices empty out after December 24, and the blocks around Empire State Plaza and the Capitol go quiet in a way that never happens in October. Walking from the Capitol steps down State Street to the Hudson waterfront at Quackenbush Square takes about fifteen minutes and you may pass only a handful of people. The upside is real: the New York State Museum on Madison Avenue is free and rarely crowded that week, and the observation level of the Corning Tower, open weekdays, gives you the whole snow-dusted city without a queue.

Weather decides your day. Late December averages highs near freezing with a real chance of lake-effect snow off the Mohawk Valley, and daylight ends by 4:30pm. Plan indoor mornings and treat any clear afternoon as a gift: the Washington Park loop, designed by Calvert Vaux, is lovely in fresh snow and a ten-minute walk from Lark Street. Bring boots rated for ice, not fashion boots, because sidewalks on the side streets off Lark stay slick for days after a storm.
